Paul Tillier Oil Painting. Original?
My friend recently bought a trunk in an auction inside it amongst other things was an oil painting by Paul Tillier. The other items indicated the previous owner had alot of money and she would have been alive when Paul Tillier was in his prime.
The mission is now on to find out if its an original. Its definatly an oil not a print, she has contacted Bonhams and Sothebys and is waiting to hear back from them.
Who else could we contacted, and is there any other ways we could find out?
A quick google search will hopefully show you who, if anyone, deals in his work. Since neither Bonhams or Sotheby's are formal appraisers of authenticity, you might want to consult a professional dealer. If you cannot find a dealer, find out what museums have his work in their collection and contact either the director or one of the main curators of the 19th century painting department. In the meantime, INSURE IT. If the painting is authentic, more than 12 x 20 in. and in good condition, it could be worth in excess of $30,000.
P.S. The word you're looking for is "authentic" not "original". If it's an actual painting, it's automatically "original".
