How do you distinguish Chinese-Japanese-Korean Asians from Indian-Sri Lankan Asians when describing them?
No offense, honest. But are they "categorized" differently? One group is "Southeast Asian" and the other is just "Asian?" Or...?
I tend to think of the subcontinent of India as technically Asian but not really Asian in the Chinese-Japanese-Korean sense. When I say Asian, I tend to mean C-J-K. If I mean to refer to the subcontinent within Asia that is separated from the rest of it both geographically and culturally, I don't say Asian. I say Indian.
It's the same exact thing with the Middle East. It's a subcontinent that has little if anything to do with Asia, though it technically is part of the Asian continent. It's not European, it's not really African. It's technically Asian, but I don't think of it as "straight-up" Asian. Only technically. Jesus, for example, was a Jew from the Middle East. Do you think of Jesus as an Asian?
To summarize, I tend to not describe Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, or Sri Lankans as Asians at all. I do tend to describe Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans as Asian.
