Copyright question - using data from a book search for a Web site?
I have a book that catalogs all solar and lunar events for each planet in the solar system. There are a ton of data that covers almost 50 years and I want to use some thereof for a website. I'm only interested in a period of 20 years and I'll use that 70% of the data (principal statistics, not the minor). More importantly, my site has data that they compiled from personal memory and user submissions. How do I handle this as far where the copyright for the original owner? I do not want them to be able to return to my day and try to sue me. I want to their credit and could even put a link to where the book can be bought, but I do not want to risk telling them that I can not use it. Before communicate with them, I want to make sure they can not legally sue me (assuming they can not).
