Is it true that Ulitarian objects are considered artifacts rather than art?
Since you capitalized Ulitarian maybe you have some mysterious cult in mind, but Google finds only your question with that spelling, so probably you meant Unitarian objects and a context would help. One of the ongoing arguments is whether crafts can be art and I just read a book that says that up through WWII there was no question that craft was as respected as art, but when the intense middle class of the 50's was provided with kitsch kits of beads, etc., which the book calls crafting, the practice of craft got degraded to a kind of adult playing around.
All through history, utilitarian objects had been decorated and made with style and are generally considered art and not just artifacts. Mass production has dumped a lot of designs on the market which make no attempt to be anything other than a container - a cylinder with a handle for boiling water - so we look amazed at creative craft designs for teapots, serving bowls, and decorative containers.
